How Much Does an Air Ambulance Cost?
There is no single price — but five factors explain almost all the variance.
Air ambulance pricing is built up from aircraft hire, crew, medical equipment, fuel, permits and ground logistics. A short intra-European jet mission can cost from roughly €25,000–€45,000; a transatlantic long-range mission with ICU crew can exceed €120,000–€180,000.
What drives the cost
Distance and aircraft category: range, runway and cabin space determine which aircraft can do the job — and that dominates the cost.
Crew composition: doctor + nurse is standard; adding a perfusionist, paediatrician or ECMO team raises it.
Permits and slots: peak summer Mediterranean slots, complex overflight permits, and out-of-hours airport handling all add cost.
Ground logistics: bed-to-bed includes ambulance crews at both ends; that is usually included in our quotes.
Insurance involvement: many travel and expat insurance policies cover repatriation. We work with insurers, but the policy decides cover.
How to keep cost down
Commercial medical escort is far cheaper than private jet for stable patients. Where clinically safe, it can save 60–90% on the equivalent private flight.
