Helicopter Emergency Medical Service — rotary-wing emergency response, typically to incident scenes or short inter-hospital transfers.
HEMS aircraft (commonly AW139, EC135, EC145, H145) are configured for scene response and short critical-care transfers. They land at scenes, hospital helipads, mountain sites and offshore platforms.
HEMS is distinct from fixed-wing air ambulance — it is built for speed-to-scene and short sectors, not long-range repatriation.
