Air Ambulance vs Medevac vs Casevac — What's the Difference?
Three terms, similar idea — but each carries a different operational nuance.
Air ambulance
The aircraft category. Any aircraft equipped for medical transport — jet, turboprop or helicopter — is an air ambulance.
Medevac
Medical evacuation. Emphasises the urgency and mission-led nature of the flight — moving a patient out of a place where they cannot receive adequate care.
Casevac
Casualty evacuation. Originally a military term for evacuating casualties from a combat or austere environment, often before full medical care is established. In civilian use, casevac sometimes describes evacuation from remote industrial or expedition sites.
In practice
Most civilian missions are correctly described as 'air ambulance flights' or 'medevac' interchangeably. Casevac is less common outside military, security and remote-industry contexts.
