· ClinicalICU Flight
Also known as: ICU air ambulance · Critical care transport
An air ambulance mission flown with intensive-care-level equipment and crew for critically ill patients.
An ICU flight replicates the capabilities of a hospital intensive care unit inside the aircraft cabin: ventilation, multi-parameter monitoring, multiple infusion pumps, advanced airway management and often ECMO or balloon pump support.
Crew typically includes an intensive-care physician plus an ICU nurse. Aircraft selection prioritises cabin volume and stable cabin pressure — most ICU missions use mid-size to long-range jets.
